But things are slowly hyped up and foreshadowed. Not much happens until you hit the 75% mark. ![]() Like her previous books, this one starts slow. Silvia Moreno-Garcia is a master at amping up the tension before finally paying us off with emotionally and thematically charged climaxes. This is a reimagining superior than the original book, featuring eugenics, body horror, colonialism, racism, colorism, sexism, and religion. You do not need to read the original book, The Island of Doctor Moreau, to understand The Daughter of Doctor Moreau. She had many memories of her school, church, and time spent with her favorite team, the Dodgers, which were all positive. Goodwin has great memories about her neighborhood. Also in her story, she highlights the good and bad things about growing up as a suburban child. The memoire includes many memories of how she and her family were affected during the atomic bomb and McCarthyism. Goodwin talks about multiple members of her family, including her father, Michael, her mother, Helen, her two sisters, Charlotte and Jeanne, and her best friend while growing up, Eileen.
